Gritr is built to keep your health and nutrition history under your control.
Core app data
Your profile, goals, food logs, exercise logs, weight entries, recipes, and preferences are stored on your device. Gritr does not require an account and does not sell personal data or use advertising trackers.
When iCloud sync is available, Apple may store an encrypted copy of your app data in your private iCloud account. Gritr's developer does not have access to that private CloudKit database. Apple's services are governed by Apple's privacy policy.
AI Photo Scan
AI Photo Scan is optional. Before the first cloud scan, Gritr asks for your consent. You can continue using the free on-device photo recognizer without uploading a photo.
When you use AI Photo Scan:
- The selected photo is sent over HTTPS to the Gritr scan service and then to Anthropic's Claude API to identify food and estimate nutrition.
- The Gritr scan service processes the photo in memory and does not save the photo.
- Anthropic's standard API service may retain API inputs and outputs for up to 30 days, subject to its commercial data-retention policy and limited safety or legal exceptions.
- The request includes a random app-install identifier. Gritr stores that identifier with scan counters to enforce free and paid limits. It is not tied to your name, Apple ID, advertising identifier, or contact information.
- Network abuse controls store a one-way hash derived from the request IP address for up to 48 hours. Gritr does not store the raw IP address.
- Apple-signed purchase information may be verified in memory to confirm Gritr Pro access. Gritr does not receive payment-card or billing information.
AI Photo Scan data is used only to provide the scan, enforce service limits, prevent abuse, and operate the feature. It is not used for advertising or cross-app tracking. See Anthropic's Privacy Center for its API data practices.
Other services
- Open Food Facts: A scanned barcode number is sent to Open Food Facts to retrieve public nutrition information.
- Apple StoreKit: Apple processes in-app purchases. Gritr receives only purchase and entitlement status.
- Apple Health: Health data is accessed only with your permission and processed through Apple's HealthKit APIs.
Deleting data
Use Profile > Preferences > Delete All Data to remove Gritr data stored on your device. Manage iCloud data through your Apple Account and iCloud settings. AI scan inputs retained by Anthropic are automatically deleted under Anthropic's API retention policy and cannot be connected to a Gritr account because Gritr has no account system.
Changes and contact
This policy may be updated as Gritr changes. Questions can be sent to johnmontalvo6944@gmail.com.
